I’m a big fan of Yaesu’s radios, and have been anxiously awaiting the VX-8R to be released since details about it started leaking out earlier this year. I currently own a VX-7R which I have found to be a fantastic HT. The 8R builds on top of it with some great added features including GPS and APRS built in. There are not a lot of details about the APRS implementation, but I’m optimistic. Another big change is the volume/tuner knob is the "new" style introduced on the VX-3R (I have a VX-3R ordered, should be here this week, so I’ll be able to comment on that). The radio is built in Japan instead of China as the pervious ones were, so it will be interesting to see the differences in craftsmanship.
A few big write ups today have featured www.cuil.com as a contender to compete with Google for search. Unfortunately by typing in my name I didn’t get any results on Cuil, but on Google I’m still #1. So sorry Cuil, I can’t use you.

This is simply amazing footage. Very cool stuff.
I wish I had a picture to post, but we forgot the camera. I took my three older kids to the river yesterday for some memorial day weekend fishing, and we had a fabulous time. We discovered some great spots along the South Platte River, only about 45 minutes from our house. In total we caught 6 rainbow trout out of the river, and are counting a half catch for the fish that jumped off the hook when we were pulling it out of the water.
We could have caught more, but we spent a lot of time simply having fun. All in all it was a great day fishing!
Listening to the radio late last night on my drive home the topic was how the community can help the people who were impacted by the tornado. Many people who had to evacuate their homes find themselves in a difficult position with how to care for their pets while they are trying to recover and rebuild. It was nice to hear people call into the radio show and offer their homes to take shelter pets during this difficult time.
The Mister Preparedness blog has a great post on dealing with pets in an emergency.
I fell in love in the third grade. I knew she and I had been together in a previous life. I can’t tell you how I knew. I just did. She’s my soul mate. I’ve loved her forever. I can’t imagine loving her more. I will always love her, forever.
We watched August Rush together on Sunday, and I completely enjoyed it. I love music, and I love fantasy. And I love it soul mates meet. Following are the lyrics of the song that reminded me how lucky I am to be one of the few that found their soul mate.
(Elgar intro)
When the one thing you’re looking for
Is nowhere to be found
And you back stepping all of your moves
Trying to figure it out
You wanna reach out
You wanna give in
Your head’s wrapped around what’s around the next bend
You wish you could find something warm
‘Cause you’re shivering cold
It’s the first thing you see as you open your eyes
The last thing you say as your saying goodbye
Something inside you is crying and driving you on
It’s the first thing you see as you open your eyes
The last thing you say as your saying goodbye
Something inside you is crying and driving you on‘Cause if you hadn’t found me
I would have found you
I would have found youSo long you’ve been running in circles
‘Round what’s at stake
But now the times come for your feet to stand still in one place
You wanna reach out
You wanna give in
Your head’s wrapped around what’s around the next bend
You wish you could find something warm
‘Cause you’re shivering cold
It’s the first thing you see as you open your eyes
The last thing you say as your saying goodbye
Something inside you is crying and driving you on
It’s the first thing you see as you open your eyes
The last thing you say as your saying goodbye
Something inside you is crying and driving you on‘Cause if you hadn’t found me
I would have found you
I would have found youIt was your first taste of love
Living upon what you hadIt’s the first thing you see when you open your eyes
The last thing you say as your saying goodbye
Something inside you is crying and driving you on‘Cause if you hadn’t found me
I would have found you
I would have found you
I would have found you
I would have found you
Received an informative bit if information in e-mail this morning regarding earthquake preparedness. Considering the increasing number of earthquakes all over the place, I thought I’d share it here.
Thursday night I completed both basic and advanced weather spotter training. It was pretty interesting stuff. We learned all sorts of of great stuff including how to properly identify the components of severe weather, and what to do when we see it. Probably the most interesting fact was how necessary human spotters are in accurately detecting severe weather and warning people of its potential dangers.
Jase came with me, we both should receive our weather spotter IDs in the mail soon.
